History of Maryport
Maryport boasts a rich history dating back to Roman times when it was known as Alauna. The town played a crucial role in the defense of the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Evidence of this can be seen in the numerous archaeological finds, including altars, inscriptions, and the remains of a Roman fort, which are displayed at the Senhouse Roman Museum.

In the 18th century, Maryport was transformed by Humphrey Senhouse, who laid out the town's grid pattern and built the harbour to support the coal and shipbuilding industries. The town’s Georgian architecture reflects this period of prosperity and growth.
